You're Going to Miss This

While driving in the van the other night, a sappy song came on the radio that Andy & I like to sing. The gist of the song is "you're going to miss this one day so don't spend this time wishing for what's to come in the future...enjoy where you are right now."
We looked back at our 3 kids bundled up and smiled.

My mom got some advice from my grandma one time that she has now given to me. I repeat this in my head nearly every day..."Don't wish your life away."
Sometimes when I am caught up in the laundry, cleaning, spit up, poop (yes, poop), time outs, sleepless nights, and discipline parts of being a mom, I "wish" for the future.

This morning I ran to the store for 3 things with Bennett and Brooks. I will spare you all the details but the trip ended up taking 45 minutes and we ended with spilled chocolate milk on the floor, screaming baby, screaming toddler, and a sweaty & embarrassed mom.
One elderly man gave me a sympathetic smile and said, "your hands are full."
It was one of those moments I "wished" during.

However, right at this moment I have 2 sleeping boys, 2 sleeping dogs, 1 girl at school, 2 loads of laundry folded and 2 loads being washed and dried, 1 hot cup of coffee, and a camera that is full of normal, everyday moments that someday will mean the world to me.

Yes, my hands are full and at times, even overflowing.
 But, so is my heart.

Horseland

horseland horseland
"Horseland"
Marie and Bennett have been going through a "horse" phase that I don't think will be going anywhere anytime soon.
Marie has always loved horses but lately it is borderline obsession. They watch a show on Netflix called, "Horseland," which is about a stable full of kids and their horses. They know the terminology, discuss barrel racing techniques, and even have their own imaginary horses in the house: Bella and Max.
Marie and Bennett do their horse chores before bed. You know, brushing, giving water and carrots, and sometimes practicing their routines for the upcoming show.

They wear their hats and run around the house yelling, "Go Girl!  Go Boy!"
It's quite the scene.
Marie is fully capable of riding "bare back" on her horse but apparently Bennett prefers a saddle.

Marie insists she will run a riding lesson horse farm when she is older while also being a mom and a singer.
Bennett wants a truck and trailer...and don't forget his cowboy boots!

Life as a Coyote

After Andy worked on Saturday morning we decided to take a trip to Vermillion to watch the Coyote Men's Basketball Game.
The kids were anxious to go back to the Dome and so were the parents.
This was Brooks' first trip to Vermillion...too bad he wasn't even awake for it.

The game was uneventful but fun all the same.
We saw Charlie the Coyote, visited Papa's picture, started the brainwashing to "hate State" with Brooks, ate snacks, caught a few passes from the USD Football team, jumped in the jump house, and even caught a free T-Shirt.

After the game we drove around town showing the kids our homes and favorite places.
Unfortunately we couldn't show them our house from when we were first married...it was torn down.
I was pretty upset because I can't even find a picture of it...the only thing left on the property is a little tree that we used to put lights on at Christmas time.

We ended our trip with a meal at Little Italy's - the greasiest and best pizza in town.
We ordered one for the night and one to go - the same "Saturday Special" we used to do when we were first married.
The kids were stuffed and ready for bed by the time we were done.

It was a great day to be a Coyote!

must remember...

lately there have been so many important things that have happened around here.
they may not seem important to others but they stop me in my tracks and they either make me smile or secretly break my heart.
I hear a silly phrase from Bennett, I see Marie give a loving touch to her brother, or Brooks literally grows before my eyes.
I seem to be forgetting them so I am going to do my best at remembering a few.

Bennett:
"Mom what should we do today, go get groceries, walk around the water tower, or go to Bomgaars?"
(Bennett walking into our house) "Hmmm...I think I've met this house before. Yep, I remember it now."
(Bennett looking at Brooks) "Mom, Brooksy be so much cool."
Bennett looking at Brooks...again) "Mom, he is the best people I've ever met."
(Needing a time out) "Fine, it's all my fault!"
"Phew! Mom, when something makes me feel tired, I say, that word."
(Bennett jumping on the trampoline) "Wow Mom, I am so much cool, this is awesome!"
(Bennett not wanting his coat on) "I don' t want you to help me I want her...my favorite sister!"
(Bennett rubbing his nose on Brooks' nose) "Mugga Mugga." (this is what a little cartoon character says to his momma and it means 'I love you')

Marie:
(VERY tired and not wanting to go to bed and crying) "Mom, I don't understand something...why don't the Muetings, you know, our family, why don't the Muetings ever go to the zoo?  We have only gone a few times and I really love animals and I don't think it's fair!"
(Marie cuddling with Brooks after Bennett fell asleep) "Finally, it's just you and your big sister." Brooks proceeded to grab her finger and smile so big and bright.
"Mom, how can God be everywhere? And Ms. Eileen tells us to listen for him but I don't think I understand God's talking."
(After getting into trouble for a smart mouth) "See it's like I have 2 brains...a nice brain and a naughty brain and the naughty brain always wins...I can't stop it!"

***
Today after a tiring trip to the gymnastics studio, the kids cuddled on the couch with their blankets under an umbrella with Marie's arm around Bennett. This was completely unprompted and hilarious. They found the umbrella in the van and it was an obsession the rest of the day.
Bennett fell asleep early on the chair. Marie noticed first, and before I could carry him to his bedroom, she covered him with a blanket.

Our kids spend a lot of time fighting and annoying one another like any other siblings...and Marie is quick to tell me, "Mom don't worry, that's what brothers and sisters do!"
I guess that makes the sweet moments just that much better.

Brooks - 2 months

Well, Brooks you have had an eventful month!
Not only did you give your parents a GIANT scare with your adventure in the hospital, but you are also smiling, playing, and even trying to move a little more!

You like to lay under your play arch and try to hit the ball. It was such a surprise to you the first day you did this!  Your whole body got so excited!

Your big sister and big brother love to spend time with you.  Although lately it seems you enjoy watching them be silly more than when they hold you.

You also like to lay near them when they are doing big kid things like coloring, putting a puzzle together, watching a movie, or reading books. Bennett always offers a crayon or puzzle piece for you to hold. He thinks of you all the time and spends most of his day talking about you and making sure you are taken care of.

Unfortunately at your 2 month appointment you had to have your first round of shots...you let everyone know how you felt about those but calmed down quickly.
You were smiling and flirting with the nurses and doctor throughout your whole visit.
At 2 months you are 13 lb 12 oz and 24 inches long.
You are filling out nicely just like your big brother and big sister did.
You still wake up every 3-4 hours at night to be fed but you go back to sleep pretty quickly. You are content most of the time but truly love to be held. Noise has never bothered you and you have fallen asleep on your own in your crib amidst the chaos of our busy house several times now.
You still love your bath and seem to enjoy our singing to you. You are talking and trying to giggle - especially at Bennett and Daddy.
We have taken you to see friends and mommy and daddy's work offices. Everyone comments on your blue eyes and perfect little face.
You are such a joy Brooks.
We love you oh so much!

Alone Time

I have to admit...I have always LOVED alone time.
Even when I was little I would request to go into my room, close the door, turn on music, and sing, dance, color, draw, or especially write. I loved to write. I guess that's why this little blog has been a bit of therapy for me over the past few years.

Marie also enjoys alone time.  She requests to go into her room and close the door every day at some point. I am not sure what she does in there all the time because I respect her desire for alone time, but I imagine it's spent doing many of the same things I used to do. She enjoy coloring, making crafts, playing with her barbies, horses, and reading.

Bennett is slowly starting to realize the value of a little peace and quiet on his own. He enjoys sitting in his room (doors must be open) and playing with his animals - cows, dinosaurs, lizard, frog, and shark.

However, they most appreciate when they get alone time with one of us...one on one without the other kids around.
So, this past week, I snuck in some "alone time" with Marie and Bennett.

Marie's Date:

I picked her up from school and immediately she reminded me of our special date.
She remarked about how thirsty she was and how she had been thinking of a strawberry smoothie all day.
So, we went to a coffee shop where she specifically ordered a "cold strawberry smoothie" with chips.
She picked out a table which was "too high for Bennett to sit at but we can because we are older than him."
We talked about her friends, our big move this summer, and "exactly how are we going to fit all our stuff into a big truck?"
I could tell she had a lot of really important things on her mind and I was thankful she was able to share them with me. It's amazing how old she is now and how quickly "worrying" sneaks into kids' minds.
We ended our date with a pinky swearing that we wouldn't tell Bennett...our little secret.

Bennett's Date:
We dropped Marie off at school and decided we wanted more breakfast.
It was a "home day for Bennett but not for Marie!"
So, we drove over to a shop where they had chocolate chip muffins and juice.
He walked in to the shop and ran over to a big booth that was large enough for 14 people. It was the perfect spot to sit. He ran the length of the booth, jumped the length of the booth, and even crawled "like a tiger" the length of the booth sneaking in bites of his muffin every once in awhile.  He wanted orange juice because "orange is my favorite color."
We talked about animals, who we saw in the shop and whether they were boys or girls, where Dad was ("at work") and what he does there ("helps sick people and mommies and babies like Brooksy").
We ended our date with a half-eaten muffin, spilled juice, and bump on the head.
Instead of walking out to the van I carried him because he was "still little and feeling very tired."
I could tell he appreciated being the big boy that morning but still needs to be my little boy, too.
still asleep after our trip home from our "date"
Now that I'm a mom, my alone time comes in much shorter increments and at times I wish for my childhood room where I could sing, draw, write, and be alone for awhile. But I know our kids are little for such a short time so I am doing my best to sneak in moments like these as often as I can.

Valentines Day

Valentines Day preparation was in full swing at our house this year.
Marie had the idea to make a "horse" box.
This ended up being a family event with much input from Mom and Dad.

Bennett made a Jake the Pirate box with one piece of paper and 75 pieces of tape.
However, no pictures were allowed according to Bennett.
Both kids celebrated with the class friends and teachers.
They came home with way too much candy but they had a fun time exploring and trying it all!

On Valentine's Night, Andy had the opportunity to work on call for the Sioux City Musketeer Hockey game. He got free tickets so we decided to make it a family event. Marie and Bennett really enjoyed the game and all the craziness. Brooks stayed asleep the entire game even though we were right on the ice in the action...this kid can sleep through anything!

2 slushies, 1 big bag of popcorn, and 4 fist fights on the ice later, we headed home with some exhausted kids!

Back in the Flow

We took some time this weekend to enjoy the beautiful weather and a few visits from family.
On Saturday, the kids and I went to the art center for the morning.

They enjoy the kid area and the painting of horses at the top of the long, winding staircase.
Afterwards, we met Grandma Nel for lunch, and enjoyed an afternoon with her, a walk, and some time outside with the dogs.

On Sunday, Grammy & Papa met us at mass followed by brunch at our favorite place...mainly because of the chocolate fondue and marshmallows.

After a busy but "normal" week, we are officially back to being as normal as normal can be.
A few showings of the house, Andy back to work in his last few months of residency, kids back in school, a clean bill of health for Brooks, and our usual Friday Movie Night.
Life is pretty good right now.
