Savoring the Moment

About two weeks ago we noticed that Gus wasn't eating much, losing weight, and pretty lethargic.
It was significant enough that we knew something had to be wrong.
Blood work and a few biopsies later revealed that our poor buddy had advanced stage lymphoma.
Treatment options included time away from us with chemotherapy and possible radiation with a poor prognosis.

As a family, we have chosen to spend our time with Gus at home where he is comfortable and happy.
Although he is very skinny, and not eating very well, he still loves chasing the tennis ball, cuddling up with the kids, going for a run with Andy, and walks with Kelly.
He is allowed to indulge in whatever he desires pretty much...chicken, bacon, cookies, and even sweet potatoes.
The kids are aware of his cancer and they are very sad. They have created a bucket list for him and are enjoying making these memories already. He has gone swimming, eaten an ice cream cone, slept all night with Marie, and even enjoyed an afternoon nap on the couch where he is usually not allowed.
Gus is such a good dog. He has only been with us a few short years and were are holding onto him as long as he is happy and able to enjoy the life he loves.
We are all too aware that soon we will have a big loss to cope with in this house. But, for now, we are just going enjoy him, pet him, and give him all the love he deserves...and of course throw that dang tennis ball a few more times.
